BMW 6 Series
The large coupé, convertible and Gran Coupé, built on 5 Series architecture in every generation — E60 under the E63, F10 under the F12, G30 under the G32 — so 5 Series data covers the running gear. Two engine stories matter. The E63's N62 V8 is the one with the reputation: valve-stem seals harden and produce start-up smoke, the alternator bracket gasket leaks oil onto the belt, and the coolant transfer pipe in the vee of the engine fails in a way that requires the intake off to reach. Later N63 V8s move the turbochargers inside the vee and add their own heat-related failures. The convertible's roof module and the active-steering system on so-equipped cars each set their own codes and neither touches the engine.

F06, F12 and F13 2011–2018
The F10 5 Series underneath, in three shapes: the F13 coupé, the F12 convertible and the F06 four-door Gran Coupé. Petrol is the N55 six or the N63 V8, diesel the N57 six, and the M6 is the S63 behind a seven-speed dual clutch — the first turbocharged M6. No four-cylinder was ever offered in one of these.

G32 2017–2023
A different car wearing the same badge: the 6 Series Gran Turismo is a five-door fastback on the G30 5 Series' CLAR platform, and it replaces the 5 Series Gran Turismo rather than the coupé. Four-cylinder petrol and diesel reach a 6 Series for the first time, the eight-speed ZF is the only gearbox, and self-levelling rear air suspension is standard — so a ride-height complaint here is a fault rather than an option nobody fitted.
