P0817: Inibição do motor de partida — circuito aberto
O que fazer
Establish which way it has failed before anything else. If the car will not crank at all, it is the safe failure and merely inconvenient. If the engine cranks while a gear is engaged, do not use the vehicle until it is repaired — always apply the parking brake fully and select neutral before turning the key, and keep people away from the front of the car.
O que este código significa
A fault in the circuit that prevents the starter operating unless the transmission is safely out of gear. This is a safety interlock, and the only question that matters about it is which way it has failed — because the two directions have opposite consequences.
Failed closed, the interlock never releases and the engine will not crank at all. Inconvenient, occasionally stranding, entirely safe.
Failed open, the interlock no longer blocks anything and the starter will operate with a gear engaged. On a manual transmission the starter is powerful enough to move the vehicle, so cranking in gear makes the car lurch forward — into whatever is in front of it, with the driver expecting nothing to happen. That is a genuine risk to people standing near the vehicle, and it is the reason this code is not treated as a minor electrical fault.
