The car drives normally, and that is exactly why this matters: with the airbag warning light on, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may not work in a crash. The system switches itself off when it cannot check itself, which is the safe choice — but it means the protection is not there.
Your seatbelts still work mechanically and should obviously still be worn; what is missing is the part that tightens them instantly in an impact, and the airbags.
Get this fixed rather than living with the lamp. It is also a roadworthiness test failure in most places.
Do not try to investigate it yourself. Airbags are explosive devices, and disturbing the wiring with the battery connected can set one off — at close range that causes serious injury. Leave it to someone with the proper isolation procedure.
One thing genuinely worth mentioning: has anyone moved the front seats right forward or back recently, or cleaned underneath them? The connectors for the seat sensors, side airbags and belt pretensioners are under there, and disturbing them is by a distance the commonest cause of this. It is also one of the cheapest to put right.

The restraints control module has stopped being heard from. The general reasoning is at U0100.
This module fires the airbags and the seatbelt pretensioners, and the consequence of the fault is worth stating without hedging: with the airbag warning lamp lit, the airbags may not deploy in a crash.
The system disables itself when it cannot verify its own integrity, which is the correct and safe direction — an airbag that fires when it should not is far more dangerous than one that does not fire at all. But the effect is that the protection is simply absent, and nothing about driving the car reveals it.
The car drives perfectly. The seatbelts still work mechanically. What has gone is the pretensioner that pulls the belt tight in the first milliseconds of an impact, and the airbags behind it.
Two things follow, and neither is optional. An illuminated airbag lamp is a roadworthiness test failure in most jurisdictions. And this is not a system to investigate at home: airbag modules contain pyrotechnic charges, disturbing connectors with the battery connected can deploy one, and a deploying airbag at arm's length causes serious injury. Isolation procedures exist for good reason.
With that said, the commonest cause is not the module and not the airbags — it is the connectors under the front seats. Seat occupancy sensors, side airbags and belt pretensioners all connect beneath the seat, and the wiring runs through a loom that flexes every time the seat is moved. Thousands of adjustments, plus vacuuming, feet and things pushed underneath, work those connectors loose and chafe that loom — and sliding a seat fully forward or back to clean under it is a classic trigger for an airbag lamp appearing the same day. That is worth mentioning if it happened.
The other recurring cause is the clockspring described at U0126, the coiled flat cable carrying signals across the rotating steering column, which is what connects the driver's airbag.
