Delay before the car moves when selecting drive
You select D or R and nothing happens for a moment, then the car engages — sometimes with a thump.
Engaging a gear means filling a clutch with fluid and applying it, and the delay is that filling taking too long. A healthy transmission does it in a fraction of a second because the passages are already full and pressure is already there.
Delay that is worst first thing in the morning and improves as you drive is the classic pattern, and it usually means fluid has drained back out of the circuit overnight past a seal or a check ball that no longer seals. Delay that is present hot as well is more serious — falling pump pressure or worn elements.
On a stop-start car there is an innocent version of this. The engine-driven pump stops with the engine, so an electric auxiliary pump keeps pressure up at a red light. If that pump has failed, the car simply pauses before moving after each restart — a fault worth fixing but not a failing gearbox, and often blamed on the battery instead.
