Ford's longitudinal six-speed — behind the F-150, Mustang, Expedition, Ranger, Transit and Lincoln Navigator.

It is a ZF design built under licence, and knowing that is genuinely useful rather than trivia. The 6HP26 family is its parent, so a great deal of what is written about the ZF unit — the mechatronic module, the sealed-for-life fluid argument, the failure sequence — describes this gearbox too, and there is far more of it because ZF sold theirs to half of Europe.

Its most-reported symptom is a harsh or delayed 1–2 change, and it is usually not mechanical. The transmission adapts to how the car is driven, and a relearn after a battery disconnection or a software update resolves a great many complaints that were about to be quoted as a rebuild.

The mechatronic unit is the expensive failure, and it announces itself electrically — a gear refused, a limp mode, a solenoid code — rather than by slipping. Fluid is what shortens its life: it is filled with Mercon LV, it is not sealed for life whatever the brochure implied, and the mechatronic's solenoids are the first thing worn fluid damages.

Do not confuse it with the 10R80. Ford's later ten-speed replaced it in the same cars, sometimes in the same model year, and the two share nothing — the tell is the ratio count on the selector display rather than anything under the car.
