P0814: Transmission Range Display Circuit

What to do

If your gear selector is a lever that stays where you put it, this is largely cosmetic. If it is a rotary dial or a spring-loaded electronic selector that returns to centre, the display is your only confirmation of the selected gear — treat it as urgent, and be deliberate about checking the vehicle's direction before releasing the brake.

What this code means

A fault in the circuit driving the gear position display. On a vehicle with a conventional mechanical selector this is close to cosmetic — the lever's own position tells the driver what is selected, and the display merely confirms it.

On a vehicle with an electronic shifter it is not cosmetic at all. Monostable and rotary selectors return to a neutral resting position after every input and give no tactile indication of the gear chosen, so the display is the only confirmation of what the vehicle will do when the brake is released. Losing it on such a vehicle removes the driver's sole means of knowing whether it is in drive or reverse, which is a genuine hazard rather than an inconvenience.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
