P2601: Coolant Pump A Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off
What to do
If the cooling system has been worked on recently — a hose, a thermostat, a radiator, anything that meant draining it — say so immediately. These pumps do not self-prime, so an air pocket left behind after a refill stops one moving coolant even though it is running perfectly. Re-bleeding the system properly costs nothing and is the commonest answer in that situation, while leaving it alone will eventually destroy the pump, because the coolant is what lubricates it.
If there has been no recent work, check the coolant level on a cold engine — a system that is low has air in it, and the air ends up exactly where it causes this. Watch the temperature gauge in slow traffic in the meantime.
What this code means
The coolant pump is being commanded and the result does not match — the pump draws the wrong current, reports the wrong speed, or the temperatures that should respond to it do not. What the pump is for is at P2600.
The cause worth naming first is not a fault at all but a consequence of recent work: an air lock. These pumps are small, they are not self-priming, and an air pocket sitting in one will stop it moving coolant while it spins perfectly happily. A cooling system that has been drained — for a hose, a thermostat, a head gasket, a radiator — and then refilled without a proper bleed or a vacuum fill leaves exactly that. So this code appearing shortly after any cooling system repair is an incomplete bleed until proven otherwise, and re-bleeding is free where a pump is not.
The same reasoning connects it to coolant level: a system that is low has air in it by definition, and the air collects at the high points. If a level warning has been seen recently, deal with that first — the pump may be reporting the consequence of a leak rather than a fault of its own.
Running one of these pumps dry damages it, because the coolant is what lubricates and cools the pump itself. That is why an air lock left alone turns into a genuinely failed pump, and why the order of investigation matters more here than usual.
