P0483: Cooling Fan Rationality Check
What to do
Treat any temperature gauge climbing above normal as urgent — stop and let it cool rather than pressing on. If the fans can be heard running and it still overheats, the fault is in the cooling system rather than the fans, and continuing to drive risks head gasket damage.
What this code means
The module commanded the fans and the result did not match what it expected. Coolant temperature did not fall when the fans were told to run, or fan speed feedback disagreed with the command — a plausibility failure rather than an electrical one.
This is the fan code most likely to have a cause outside the fan circuit entirely. If the fans are running correctly but temperature is not falling, the problem is the cooling system's ability to shed heat: a radiator blocked externally with debris or internally with sediment, a thermostat stuck shut, a failed water pump, or air trapped in the system after a coolant change. Confirming the fans are physically spinning before pursuing the electrics saves considerable time.
