What to do

Watch the temperature gauge in traffic. A slow fan still moves some air, so the car may seem fine at speed and creep up when stationary. Overheating causes damage that costs many times this repair.

What this code means

A fan is turning more slowly than commanded. This is the most easily missed of the fan faults, because the fan is running — it looks and sounds like a working cooling system while moving too little air to do the job in traffic.

Stiffening bearings and a poor earth connection are the two dominant causes, and they present identically. Measuring voltage drop across the fan's supply and earth while it runs distinguishes them: a healthy supply with a slow fan indicts the motor, and a large drop indicts the connection.
