What to do

If this happened once during unusually hard use on a hot day, ease off and let it cool — that is the protection working as designed. If it recurs in normal driving, have the transaxle fluid level and condition checked before anything else: fluid is the motor's coolant, and a fluid service is a fraction of the price of the conclusions people otherwise jump to.

What this code means

The drive motor genuinely got too hot. This is the thermal event the circuit codes only guard the measurement of.

What cools an electric motor in a hybrid transaxle is the transmission fluid. The windings shed heat into the fluid and the fluid carries it to the cooler — so the fluid is doing for the motor exactly what it does for the clutches in a conventional automatic, and the corpus's oldest argument applies here in a place few people expect it: level and condition of the transmission fluid are the first check on an overheating motor. Degraded fluid moves heat measurably worse, and a low level uncovers the very windings that need bathing.

Beyond fluid, the honest causes are work and weather: sustained hard electric running — a long climb, towing, repeated hard acceleration in traffic — in high ambient temperatures. The module protects the motor by derating well before damage, so the code plus a power drop on a hot climb is the system working. The code earning attention is the one that recurs in ordinary driving: that pattern says the cooling path has degraded, and the fluid is where the answer usually is.

A lying temperature sensor can produce this code with no real heat — but treat that as the last explanation, not the first, because assuming the sensor is wrong is how genuinely cooked motors get driven to death.
