P0EC9: Air Conditioning Refrigerant Distribution Valve A Stuck/Open

Air conditioning or battery cooling will work inconsistently — often depending on what else the car is doing. Note the circumstances: whether the cabin fails to cool while rapid charging, or the battery overheats only when the air conditioning is on hard. That detail is most of the diagnosis.

What this code means

The first refrigerant distribution valve is mechanically stuck open.

A refrigerant distribution valve is what makes one air conditioning circuit do three jobs, and it exists only because an electric car asks it to.

A conventional system has one evaporator and cools one thing: the cabin. An electric car's refrigerant circuit also has to chill the traction battery through a coolant heat exchanger, and on a heat-pump vehicle run backwards to heat the cabin. Those demands compete, and they arrive in combinations — cooling the cabin while chilling the battery during a rapid charge on a hot day is the hardest of them.

So the refrigerant is routed rather than simply switched on, and these valves are what route it. A stuck valve therefore does not produce "no air conditioning" — it produces the wrong thing being cooled.

That is the diagnostic signature worth carrying: a cabin that will not get cold while the battery is being rapid-charged, or a battery that overheats only when the air conditioning is running hard, or heating that fails on a heat-pump car while cooling still works. Complaints that depend on what else the car is doing at the time point here, and they are easy to dismiss as intermittent.

Stuck open means refrigerant keeps flowing down this path when the system wants it elsewhere. The branch this valve feeds gets cooling it does not need, and whichever branch was supposed to receive it does not. Nothing is broken and nothing is off — the cooling is simply going to the wrong place, which is why this presents as a car that cools inconsistently rather than one that does not cool.
