What to do

Ask whether this engine has a known history of intake flaps breaking off. On some engines they can snap and be drawn into a cylinder, which destroys the engine — and where that risk is known, inspecting rather than waiting is the right call. Your garage or an owners' forum for the model will know.

Ask whether the manifold can be cleaned rather than replaced. Carbon build-up is the usual cause, it has to come off either way, and cleaning is far cheaper if the linkage is undamaged.

Expect flat low-speed response and possibly worse economy, and mention any of that.

A pattern of short journeys makes this worse. Regular longer runs at sustained speed genuinely help keep carbon from building up in the intake.

What this code means

The variable intake runners on bank 1 are not moving the way the module commanded.

These flaps exist because an intake tract cannot be the right shape at every engine speed. Long, narrow runners generate velocity and swirl for good low-speed torque and clean combustion; short, wide ones flow the volume a high-revving engine needs. Rather than compromise, the manifold carries flaps that switch between them — and on a diesel they also generate the swirl that mixes fuel and air properly at low load.

Performance means the flaps responded, but not correctly. They moved slowly, stopped short, or the manifold pressure did not change the way a working set would have made it change. This is not an electrical fault — that sets a different code.

Carbon is the cause almost every time. Exhaust gas recirculation puts soot into the intake, it mixes with oil mist from the breather, and the resulting paste builds on the flaps and their spindles until the mechanism binds.

There is a serious failure mode worth knowing about on some engines, and it is the reason not to ignore this code. The flaps can break off their spindles and be drawn into a cylinder. A swallowed flap destroys the piston and head. Where a manufacturer has a known history of this, the honest advice is to inspect rather than monitor.

Ask about cleaning before replacement — the manifold often has to come off either way, and cleaning is a fraction of the cost if the linkage is sound.
