What to do
Ask whether both banks are affected. If they are, the cause is usually shared — the vacuum supply or the control solenoid — and that is a much smaller repair than two manifolds. If only this one is, the fault is local to it.
Ask whether this engine has a known history of intake flaps breaking off, since on some engines a snapped flap can be drawn into a cylinder and destroy it.
Ask about cleaning rather than replacement. The manifold usually has to come off either way and cleaning is far cheaper if the linkage is sound.
Mention any flat low-speed response or worse economy, which both fit this fault.
What this code means
The variable intake runners on bank 2 are not moving the way the module commanded.
The mechanism is bank 1's — carbon binding the flaps and spindles until the mechanism no longer moves freely. What a bank 2 code adds is a comparison, and on a V engine that comparison is genuinely useful.
Both banks have identical hardware doing identical work in the same conditions.
- One bank affected points at that manifold's linkage, actuator or vacuum supply. The mechanical fault is local.
- Both banks affected together points at something shared — the vacuum supply, the control solenoid feeding both actuators, or simply the age and mileage that carbonned them equally.
That second case is the more common on a high-mileage engine, and it changes the repair decision: if both banks are binding, both manifolds are coming off, and cleaning or replacing them in one visit is far cheaper than twice.
The broken-flap risk applies to this bank exactly as it does to the other, and it is worth restating because it is the only failure here that ends an engine. A flap that snaps off its spindle can be drawn into a cylinder.
Check the vacuum side before condemning a manifold. Many of these actuators are vacuum-operated, and a perished hose or a tired vacuum pump produces sluggish movement on both banks with the linkages perfectly free.
