P206D: Reductant Quality Sensor Circuit High
What to do
This says the vehicle cannot check the reductant fluid, not that the fluid is bad. It is a wiring or sensor fault — so do not agree to have the tank drained on the strength of this code alone.
Ask for the connector at the tank to be inspected first. It sits under the vehicle where road salt and water reach it, and corrosion there is a common cause.
Ask whether the level and temperature readings from the same unit are also wrong. On many vehicles all three sensors are one assembly, and if all three are misreporting the fault is the assembly or its connector rather than three separate parts.
Mention where the fluid was last bought and whether it came from a sealed container, which is useful context if the fluid does turn out to be suspect.
What this code means
The reductant quality sensor's circuit is reading above its valid range.
A quality sensor exists because reductant is a precise chemical solution and the vehicle is not allowed to assume it has been given one. The fluid must be 32.5% urea in demineralised water — not approximately, precisely. Too weak and it cannot convert the nitrogen oxides the dosing calculation assumes it will.
These sensors measure concentration indirectly, usually by timing an ultrasonic pulse through the fluid or by measuring its electrical permittivity, both of which vary predictably with urea content. They typically sit in the same tank assembly as the level and temperature sensors.
A circuit reading high means a short to a supply voltage or an open circuit, and as ever the module cannot distinguish them from inside. The measurement at the connector, with the sensor unplugged, separates them in a minute.
On a combined tank unit, check whether level and temperature are also implausible. If all three channels are wrong, the fault is the assembly or its shared connector rather than the quality element — and that saves diagnosing three sensors.
Note that this is a circuit fault, not a fluid verdict. The fluid may be perfect; the vehicle simply cannot check it. A quality performance code is the one that says the fluid itself is wrong, and the two should not be confused when deciding whether to drain a tank.
