P2178: System Too Rich Off Idle Bank 1
What to do
Expect worse fuel economy, possibly a smell of fuel from the exhaust, and a rough or heavy feel under acceleration. Worth attending to promptly rather than living with, because persistent excess fuel overheats the catalytic converter — which costs several times what the usual causes do. Ask for the evaporative purge valve to be checked as well as the fuel system; a purge valve stuck open is cheap, common, and causes no other symptom.
What this code means
Bank 1 is running rich off idle — too much fuel for the air being measured, with the throttle open.
The condition split explained under P2177 applies in mirror image. A rich condition off idle usually means fuel is arriving in proportion to something the module has mismeasured, rather than leaking in at a fixed rate. An airflow sensor that over-reports produces exactly this: the module meters fuel for more air than is actually entering, and the error grows with the throttle.
The other common source is fuel that is not being metered at all. A saturated charcoal canister, or an evaporative purge valve stuck open, admits fuel vapour into the intake continuously — and once the throttle opens and manifold vacuum draws harder, the contribution rises. That is worth knowing because it is a cheap valve, it produces no driveability complaint of its own, and it is frequently found only after injectors have been investigated.
Running rich matters for reasons beyond fuel economy. Unburnt fuel reaching the catalytic converter burns in the converter rather than in the cylinder, and the heat that generates is what destroys it. A converter is several times the price of the cheap valve that most often causes this.
