P2188: System Too Rich at Idle Bank 1
What to do
Expect a rough idle, a smell of fuel, and poor economy in traffic. Check whether the engine is reaching normal temperature — an engine running cold is commanded rich deliberately, so a stuck-open thermostat produces this code with nothing wrong with the fuel system at all. That is a cheap part and worth eliminating before injectors are investigated.
What this code means
Bank 1 runs rich at idle. The same reasoning that makes lean-at-idle point at air leaks makes rich-at-idle point at fuel arriving that was not asked for — because idle is where the smallest amount of fuel is being metered, so any uncommanded addition is the largest proportion of the total.
The candidates are correspondingly specific:
- A leaking injector. It drips at a rate that barely registers under load and is significant against an idle fuelling of almost nothing.
- Fuel pressure too high. A regulator holding excess pressure makes every injection larger than commanded, and the proportional error is most visible where the pulse is shortest.
- The evaporative purge valve stuck open. Vapour drawn in continuously, against the highest manifold vacuum the engine sees — which is at idle.
A fourth cause has nothing to do with fuel: an engine that is not reaching operating temperature stays in warm-up enrichment, which is a deliberately rich mixture. If the cooling system codes are also present — P0128, or the performance code at P2181 — the mixture is doing exactly what it was told and the thermostat is the fault. That is a cheap repair being reached through an expensive-looking symptom, and it is worth eliminating first.
