Vacuum Pump
Generates the vacuum that assists the brakes on engines which cannot supply it from the intake manifold — diesels, which do not throttle, and turbocharged petrols, whose manifold spends much of its time above atmospheric pressure. Characteristically fails gradually rather than suddenly, giving a brake pedal that is progressively harder, and often worse when hot.
