On modern engines oil is not only a lubricant but a working hydraulic fluid — it phases camshafts, operates rocker arm actuators and, on hydraulically actuated injection systems, provides the force that injects the fuel. So its level, grade and condition become diagnostic questions rather than service ones. Small passages and fine screens mean sludge from an extended change interval blocks control galleries, and the wrong viscosity changes how fast an actuator moves and whether it arrives in time. Checking the dipstick and the service record is free and answers a real share of these codes.
