Clicks but will not crank
Turn the key and there is a click — one solid clack, or a rapid chattering — and the engine does not turn at all. The two sounds mean different things and it is worth listening carefully: a rapid chatter is almost always insufficient current, the solenoid pulling in and immediately dropping out again, while a single firm click is the solenoid working and the motor not. Both are commonly answered with a new starter and often should not be — a corroded terminal or a poor earth strap produces either. Note whether the dashboard lights dim as you turn the key.

What this usually means
The two sounds are different faults and the distinction is free. A rapid chattering is the solenoid pulling in, collapsing the voltage, dropping out, and repeating — that is a current problem. A single firm clack is the solenoid doing its job and the motor not turning — that is a motor or a heavy-current path problem. Reaching for a starter on either sound is the standard mistake, and it is wrong about as often as it is right.
Watch the dashboard lights while you turn the key, because that costs nothing either. Lights that dim heavily or go out with the chatter confirm the supply is collapsing under load, and a battery, a terminal or an earth strap is responsible. Lights that stay bright with a single click mean the supply is holding and the fault is beyond it.
Corrosion hides under the clamp, where nobody looks. A terminal that looks clean on top can be poor underneath, and the earth strap between engine and body carries the entire starting current back — a strap corroded at its body end produces both sounds and looks perfect. German workshop references make the test explicit rather than visual: a voltage drop of more than about 0.5 V along the starter cable means a corroded cable or connection, and the measurement is taken during a cranking attempt, not with the circuit at rest, because a poor joint passes a meter's tiny test current happily.
Only once the supply is proven does the starter itself become the answer — and a solenoid whose contacts have burned is a repair to the starter rather than a reason to replace it, on many designs.
