What to do
The engine will very often run and drive normally, and the complaint is usually somewhere else — odd gearchanges, a tachometer that has stopped reading, or a warning from another system.
The most useful thing to know about this code is that it points away from the camshaft sensor rather than at it. This is about the engine module passing a signal on to another module, and it can only pass on a signal it read successfully in the first place — so the sensor has effectively proved itself. A camshaft sensor fitted for this code is money spent for nothing, unless a P0340 or P0341 is stored alongside it, in which case the sensor is genuinely in question.
What needs looking at is the wiring between the two modules, and the module at the receiving end — an input that has failed inside it can drag the line down and make the sending module report the fault.
What this code means
An open circuit on the output by which the engine module passes a camshaft position signal to another module.
Read the title carefully, because the word that decides everything is output. Every other camshaft position code in the corpus is about the module failing to receive a signal. This one is about it failing to send one.
The module reads the camshaft sensor itself. It then produces a clean, conditioned copy of that signal and transmits it onward to whatever else needs to know where the camshaft is — historically a separate ignition module, and on current vehicles typically the transmission module, an injection pump driver, or the instrument cluster. Rather than have several modules each read the same sensor through their own wiring, one reads it and distributes it.
The consequence of that arrangement is a diagnostic gift, and it points away from the parts the code's name evokes. A module can only re-transmit a signal it successfully received. So a fault on this output is close to proof that the camshaft position sensor, its wiring and its connector are all working — the module demonstrated it could read them by having something to send. The camshaft sensor is the one part this code substantially exonerates, and it is the part that most often gets replaced on the strength of it.
The engine will usually run perfectly, because the module still has its own good signal and needs nobody's help to use it. What breaks is whatever was listening: a transmission making decisions on missing information, an injection pump unable to time itself, a tachometer reading nothing.
There is a third possibility beyond the sending module and the wire, and it is easy to miss: the receiving module. An input that has failed short pulls the shared line down, and the module at the transmitting end honestly reports that its output is not behaving. The fault is then in neither the sender nor the wire. Disconnecting the receiving module and seeing whether the output recovers is the test that separates the three, and it is quick.
The discriminator worth stating plainly: if this code is stored alongside P0340 or P0341, the camshaft sensor is genuinely suspect. If it is stored on its own, it is not.
