What to do

If you can hear a harsh grinding or shrieking after the engine has started, switch off and do not restart it. The starter is being held engaged with the running engine, and the damage from continuing runs from a wrecked starter to a stripped flywheel ring gear — an engine or gearbox-out repair. This is worth a recovery truck rather than a drive.

If there is no noise, the fault may only appear at the next start, and it is still worth attending to promptly rather than waiting.

Have the battery tested at the same time, and mean it. A tired battery makes the starter draw more current for longer, which is what burns and welds relay contacts — so a relay replaced with the old battery left in place often fails again.

Mention any stop-start behaviour that has changed — the engine no longer stopping at junctions, or restarting roughly. That is often the first sign, weeks before the code.

What this code means

The third starter relay is passing current when it has been commanded off.

Stuck on is the direction that destroys things, and it needs saying first. A starter pinion is designed to mesh with a stationary or barely turning ring gear. Held engaged against an engine that has started, it is driven at many times its design speed while its gear teeth are hammered by a flywheel turning far faster than the pinion was ever meant to see. The noise is unmistakable — a harsh continuous grinding or shriek that continues after the key is released — and the damage runs from a wrecked starter to a stripped ring gear, which is a gearbox-out repair.

Why there are three relays at all is the useful background. A conventional car cranks its starter a few thousand times in its life. A stop-start car cranks tens of thousands of times, so the switching had to be re-engineered: relays are used in pairs or threes to share the load, to pull in and hold with separate paths, and to allow a change-of-mind restart while the engine is still spinning down. A relay that has become a wear item is exactly what this code reflects.

Stuck contacts are the mechanical reality behind the fault. Every break at high current draws a small arc that erodes and roughens the contact faces, and a set that has welded is a set that has arced once too often — often because the battery was weak, drawing a heavier and longer cranking current than the relay was rated for. So a flat or tired battery is upstream of a great many of these, and replacing the relay while leaving the battery repeats the fault.

This is also one of the few faults where the correct advice is to stop using the vehicle. A starter held engaged will not survive the journey, and what it takes with it is far more expensive than it is.
