Whirring or grinding as the engine starts
A harsh whirr, graunch or grinding at the moment of starting, sometimes with the engine catching anyway. The starter's gear has to engage a ring of teeth on the flywheel and then withdraw, and this noise is that engagement going wrong — which means every start is doing more damage to the flywheel teeth, and the cost of ignoring it climbs steeply once they are chewed. A single grind after the engine has already fired usually means the starter is being held on a moment too long rather than a mechanical fault.

What this usually means
The starter's gear has to engage a ring of teeth on the flywheel and then withdraw, and this noise is that engagement going wrong — which means every start is doing more damage to the flywheel teeth, and the cost of ignoring it climbs steeply once they are chewed.
That is the reason this is urgent out of proportion to how it sounds. A starter is a modest repair; a ring gear is a gearbox-out job on most vehicles, and on an automatic it is part of the flexplate. So the economics change quickly and a noise that appeared last week is much cheaper than the same noise in three months.
A single grind after the engine has already fired usually means the starter is being held on a moment too long rather than a mechanical fault — the pinion is being asked to engage a flywheel that is already spinning. That is a habit on a manual-key car and a control fault on a push-button one.
A whirr with no engagement at all is the pinion spinning without meeting the ring — a worn drive, a weak solenoid that cannot throw it far enough, or teeth already damaged at the point where the engine habitually stops.
A grind on every start points at the ring gear rather than the starter, particularly where the damage is localised: an engine tends to stop at one of a few positions, so the teeth wear there first and the noise appears only when it happens to stop at a bad spot.
