U0231: Lost Communication With Rain Sensing Module
What to do
The car drives normally, but automatic wipers will not work — and on most vehicles the automatic headlights share this module, so they may stop coming on at dusk. That is the part to watch, because from a lit cabin it is genuinely easy not to notice you are driving unlit. Use the wipers and lights manually until it is fixed.
Two free things to check first. Make sure the wiper stalk is actually in its AUTO position — knocked out of it, the symptom is identical. And if the windscreen has been replaced recently, say so: the sensor works by shining light into the glass, so it needs a clear gel pad coupling it to the screen, and a screen fitted without a new pad, or with an air bubble under it, gives exactly this complaint. That job also disturbs the connector.

A rain sensor is an optical device, not a moisture detector, and knowing that explains its whole failure pattern. It sits against the inside of the windscreen behind the mirror and shines infrared light into the glass at an angle that makes it reflect internally. Dry glass returns nearly all of it; water on the outside surface lets some escape, and the drop in returned light is the measurement.
Everything therefore depends on the sensor being optically coupled to the glass, which is done with a clear gel pad or adhesive lens. The commonest complaint is not a network fault at all but that coupling failing: an air bubble, a gel pad that has aged and lifted at one edge, or a sensor refitted without a new pad after a windscreen replacement. Any rain-sensor problem following a windscreen change is that until proven otherwise, and the same job frequently disturbs the connector.
With the module unavailable the wipers fall back to manual control, which is a genuine safety consideration rather than merely an inconvenience: a driver who has become used to automatic wipers will not be reaching for the stalk. Automatic headlights very often share this module too, so they may stop switching on at dusk — and that is the more dangerous half, because driving unlit at dusk is easy not to notice from inside a lit cabin.
Worth eliminating first, because it is free: many vehicles disable automatic wiping unless the stalk is in the AUTO position, and a stalk knocked out of that position produces an identical complaint.
