U0314: Software Incompatibility With Four-Wheel Drive Clutch Control Module

Two minutes in a car park tells you how much this matters.

Your car has an electronically controlled four-wheel drive coupling, and this code means two computers are running software that does not belong together. Nothing is broken; it is a programming job.

Usually the coupling simply releases, and the car drives as a normal front- or rear-wheel-drive car while losing grip on mud, snow or a slippery slope. Not urgent — just do not rely on it in bad conditions.

The test: drive slowly in a full-lock circle on dry tarmac. If the car binds, judders or skips its tyres on tight lock, and is fine when you straighten up, the coupling has stayed engaged. That one loads the driveline and scrubs tyres, so drive as little as possible until it is fixed.

Tell the garage that result. Binding on full lock gets investigated as a CV joint, a gearbox fault or a sticking brake, and it is none of those — saying "only on full lock, and there is a four-wheel drive software code stored" saves real money.

And mention any second-hand module. These calibrations are specific to the exact axle ratios and tyre size, which vary between models sharing a part number.

What this code means

A module is running software that does not belong with the four-wheel drive clutch control module's. See U0300 for the family and U0301 for why the named module is not the accused.

A four-wheel drive coupling is a clutch pack that is modulated rather than switched, and the modulation is entirely software. How much torque to send rearward for a given throttle position, wheel slip and steering angle, how quickly to apply it, when to release it to avoid binding on tight turns — none of that is in the hardware.

So a mismatch here has two directions, and the U0135 test distinguishes them for free.

Released is the normal, safe outcome: the vehicle drives as a front- or rear-driven car, loses traction on loose ground, and is otherwise unaffected.

Engaged, or engaged too firmly, is the one to catch. A coupling that does not release on a tight turn makes the vehicle bind, judder and skip its tyres — the two axles are being held to one speed while geometry demands different ones. That gets investigated as a constant velocity joint, a gearbox fault or a seized brake, and it is none of them.

So drive slowly in a full-lock circle on dry tarmac before deciding this is unimportant. Binding that appears only on tight lock and vanishes when the wheel is straightened is the coupling failing to release.

Where it comes from is the transfer case's list at U0303, and for the same reason: the coupling's calibration is specific to the axle ratios and tyre size of the vehicle it was written for, and those vary between models sharing a part number.
