U0303: Software Incompatibility With Transfer Case Control Module
What to do
Nothing is broken. Two of the car's computers are running software that does not belong together, and it is a programming job rather than a repair.
Expect the four-wheel-drive system to be unavailable or unreliable, and stability control possibly switched off.
One check is worth doing yourself, and it may matter more than the four-wheel drive. Compare your speedometer with a satellite speed reading from a phone. The transfer case computer's software carries the vehicle's gear ratios and tyre size, and a module from a different model or market can leave the car computing its road speed slightly wrongly — which is accepted by everything else because it looks perfectly reasonable, and quietly affects the odometer and the cruise control.
If the speedometer is out, say so. It changes this from an off-road inconvenience into something worth fixing promptly.
And mention any module that has been replaced, especially a second-hand one. Transfer case modules are highly specific to the exact model and market, so a matching part number really is not enough here.
What this code means

A transfer case module's calibration is unusually specific to the vehicle it was built for, and that is what makes second-hand parts so unreliable here.
The software carries the gear ratios of the transfer case itself, the axle ratios, the tyre rolling radius, whether low range exists, and how mode changes are permitted — all of which vary between models sharing the same part number, and several of which vary between markets on the same model.
So the failure is not confined to the transfer case. The road speed a vehicle believes it is doing is computed from wheel speed and a constant that lives in software, and where the transfer case module contributes to that, a module carrying another vehicle's ratios reports speeds that are consistently and plausibly wrong. Plausibly is the problem — a figure that is out by a few per cent is accepted by everything downstream and quietly corrupts the odometer, the cruise control and the stability system's picture.
So the practical instruction is to check the speedometer against a satellite reading — any phone will do it — before assuming the mismatch is confined to four-wheel drive.
Otherwise the usual family rule: this is a programming job, the module named may be the correct half, and the fix is bringing the set to the vehicle's current released calibration.
