Whine or growl from the electric motor
An electric whine, growl or coarse hum from the motor that was not there before, usually loudest when pulling away or under electric power. A healthy motor sings one smooth note that rises with speed; a motor down one phase, or fed unbalanced current, sounds rough in the way an engine with a dead cylinder does.

What this usually means
A healthy motor sings one smooth note that rises with speed. A motor down one phase, or fed unbalanced current, sounds rough in the way an engine with a dead cylinder does — and that comparison is the useful part of this complaint, because the mechanism really is analogous. A three-phase motor produces smooth torque only when all three phases are driven correctly; lose or unbalance one and the torque arrives in pulses, which is what the ear hears as a growl.
The position sensor is as common a cause as the windings. The inverter must know exactly where the rotor is to energise the phases at the right moment, and a resolver or position sensor that has drifted — or whose calibration was lost — makes the inverter fire slightly early or late. That produces a coarse note, poorer efficiency and more heat, with nothing electrically failed at all. It is a calibration rather than a part on many vehicles, which is worth establishing before anything is dismantled.
Separate motor noise from gear noise deliberately, because they present alike. A motor note follows motor speed and is present under electric power in either direction. A reduction gear or differential whine follows road speed and often changes on and off throttle — the loading and unloading of gear mesh — and it is a completely different repair.
And an inverter can be audible without being faulty. Switching noise, a coolant pump, and the pack's own cooling all produce electrical or mechanical notes from the same area, and several are normal. A note that is new, rough or asymmetric is the one to pursue; a smooth note that has always been there is the drivetrain being quiet enough for you to hear it.
