U0453: Invalid Data Received From Side Restraints Control Module — Left

What to do

The airbag warning light here means the side airbags and curtain on the left of the car may not deploy in a crash. The car drives normally, which is why this gets left; it should not be.

One question is worth answering before anything else: has that door had any work done? A door skin replaced, a window mechanism or lock repaired, a speaker fitted, a hole drilled for wiring or a mirror. On many cars the side impact is detected by the pressure spike inside the door cavity when it is struck, so anything that changes how well the door seals changes what the sensor reads — and the plastic sheet behind the door card, which looks like packaging, is part of that seal. Mentioning any such work saves a lot of money.

The other question is water. Door drains block with grit, the door holds water, and the electronics inside sit in it.

As at U0452: do not have the light simply cleared, do not accept a second-hand airbag module, and refuse any suggestion of fitting a resistor in place of a sensor.

Side impacts are decided separately from frontal ones, and the reason is time. In a frontal collision the structure crumples over some tens of milliseconds and there is room to measure before deciding. In a side impact there is a door, a few centimetres of trim and the occupant — the decision has to be made in a fraction of that time, which is why the sensing is done at the side of the vehicle rather than in a central module, and why some vehicles carry a controller for each side.

How the sensing is done is the useful part of this page, because one method has a consequence nobody expects. Some manufacturers use accelerometers in the B-pillar or sill. Others measure the pressure spike inside the door cavity, because a door being struck compresses the air inside it faster than the structure accelerates.

A pressure-sensing door is only as good as its sealing, and that makes ordinary bodywork and trim jobs relevant. A vapour barrier not properly refitted after a window regulator or lock repair, a door skin replaced, a speaker cut into the door card, a hole drilled for a mirror or a wiring run — any of these changes what the sensor reads, and the module correctly reports a value that no longer makes sense.

So the first question is what has been done to that door, and it is worth asking before any part is ordered. The second is water, which reaches these units through the same blocked drains that reach everything else in a door.
