U0464: Invalid Data Received From Navigation Control Module
What to do
The thing worth knowing here is that the satellite navigation now affects how the car drives, which almost nobody expects.
Modern cars use the map to look ahead. The gearbox holds a gear approaching a bend instead of changing at the wrong moment; cruise control eases off before a curve; the headlights begin to turn into a corner; stop-start stays running where the car is about to move again; a hybrid saves battery for a town it knows is coming.
So when the navigation is sending bad information, the car can feel wrong in ways that seem to have nothing to do with it — a gearbox changing at odd moments, cruise control slowing for no reason, headlights swinging on a straight road. Those get diagnosed as gearbox and radar faults, and a gearbox is an expensive thing to be wrong about. If this code is stored, say so before anything is taken apart.
Two easy things first. If the car has been standing a long time, or the battery has been flat, drive it somewhere open for ten minutes — the module may simply need to find the satellites again, and that costs nothing. And if a map update was interrupted, mention it; a half-written update is a common cause.
Otherwise the usual culprit is the aerial, normally on the roof under the fin or behind the headlining — so any recent roof, sunroof or headlining work, an aftermarket aerial, or a roof box that squashed a cable is well worth mentioning.
What this code means
The navigation control module is broadcasting data that cannot be accepted as true. See U0400 for the family's framing and U0463 for the difference between this module and the screen.
The reason this code has a higher severity than the display beside it is that navigation data is no longer only a map, and almost nobody expects the consequences.
A modern navigation module publishes the road ahead, and several systems that have nothing to do with directions consume it:
- The transmission uses it predictively — holding a gear approaching a bend or a roundabout, or selecting down before a climb, instead of reacting after the fact.
- Adaptive cruise control uses it to ease off for a curve or a known speed limit change before the driver would.
- Adaptive headlamps use it to begin bending into a corner slightly before the steering does.
- Stop-start uses it to stay running where the car is about to move again.
- A hybrid uses it to hold charge back for a city zone or a known descent.
So invalid navigation data produces driveability complaints, and they get attributed to everything except the sat-nav. A gearbox changing at odd moments, cruise control slowing for nothing, headlamps swinging where the road is straight, stop-start behaving unpredictably — each of those is normally diagnosed as a gearbox, radar or lighting fault, and the transmission is the expensive one.
So a stored navigation code alongside an odd-shifting gearbox is the more likely explanation of the two, and it is worth eliminating before anything is dismantled.
Where the fault actually is, most of the time:
- The satellite antenna, usually on the roof under the shark fin or behind the headlining. It is disturbed by roof work, a sunroof repair, a headlining drop, an aftermarket aerial, or a roof box crushing the cable.
- Map data mid-update — an update interrupted by switching the vehicle off leaves a partial database, and the module reports positions it cannot resolve.
- A long period without use or on a weak battery, after which the module has no recent position and reports implausible movement until it re-acquires.
The last of those clears itself, and it is worth driving the vehicle in the open for a few minutes before condemning anything.
