What to do
Two versions of this, and they need different reactions.
If your headlights suddenly seem not to reach anywhere — a pool of light a few metres in front of the car on an unlit road — that is the system aiming the beam down because it cannot trust its information. It is doing the safe thing, but it is genuinely dangerous on a dark road at speed. Avoid unlit roads at night until it is fixed.
If oncoming drivers have started flashing you on dipped beam, take it seriously rather than as rudeness. The other possibility is that the beams have been left aimed high, and you cannot see that from the driver's seat — only the people coming towards you can.
The car is otherwise fine, and this is usually a cheap fix. The commonest cause is not the module at all but a small sensor on the suspension that tells the car how the body is sitting — it hangs under the car in the road salt on a thin plastic link, and the link breaks. Ask for that to be checked first.
Two things to mention if they apply. If the car has been lowered or had its suspension changed, the levelling has to be recalibrated to the new ride height. And if LED or HID bulbs have been fitted into headlights built for ordinary halogen ones, that causes dazzle no levelling system can correct — it is a different problem, and it is worth undoing.

Headlamp levelling exists because a bright beam aimed a little too high dazzles oncoming drivers, and a vehicle's attitude changes constantly. Four passengers and a loaded boot pitch the nose up by a few degrees; a caravan on the back does more; braking hard pitches it down. At the light output of a gas discharge or LED headlamp those few degrees are the difference between illuminating the road and blinding somebody, which is why self-levelling is a legal requirement on those units in most markets rather than a convenience.
The system reads ride height sensors — a small lever on a suspension arm at one or both axles — and often the vehicle's deceleration too, so that it can hold the beam steady under braking rather than dipping with the body.
Invalid data has two directions and only one of them is visible to the driver, which is the point of this page.
The safe response, and the common one, is to aim the beam down. The complaint that follows is "my headlights suddenly do not reach anywhere" — a pool of light a few metres ahead on an unlit road, which the driver rarely connects to a stored code. That is genuinely dangerous at speed on a dark road, and it is the version worth treating with urgency.
The other direction is a beam left high, and the driver never sees it. Other people do. Being flashed repeatedly by oncoming traffic on dipped beam is the symptom, and it is worth taking seriously rather than as rudeness.
Where the fault usually is, in order: the ride height sensor and its link. It hangs under the vehicle on a suspension arm, in the salt and spray, with a small plastic ball joint on a thin drop link. The link snaps, the ball joint perishes and the arm corrodes — a cheap part in an awkward place, and far likelier than the module.
Two further cases worth separating from a fault. A vehicle with lowered or replaced suspension needs the levelling calibrated to its new ride height, or the system corrects to an attitude the car no longer has. And an aftermarket LED or HID bulb in a housing designed for halogen produces glare that no levelling system can correct, because the problem is the beam pattern rather than its aim. Neither of those is what this code reports, and both get blamed on it.
