Say exactly what the button does when you press it — nothing at all, an intermittent response, or a light that comes on without the system changing. That genuinely narrows the diagnosis.
Expect stop-start to be stuck on rather than off. Most vehicles default to enabled when they cannot read the switch, so the usual complaint is that you can no longer turn it off — which is a switch fault, not a fault in the stop-start system itself.
Mention any drink spilled near the switch, however long ago. These sit in centre consoles where liquid lands, and sticky residue on the contacts is a common cause.
This does not affect how the car drives beyond the engine stopping at junctions when you would rather it did not.

The stop-start disable switch is reporting a state that does not make sense.
This is the button a driver presses to turn stop-start off, and its circuit is usually more considered than a simple on-off contact — many are designed so that both a short and an open produce invalid readings rather than a plausible one, precisely so the module can tell a broken switch from a pressed one.
That design decision is why range/performance exists as a code here, and it points at something partially conducting: a switch contact worn or contaminated, moisture in the switch pack, or a connector making imperfect contact.
The behaviour when it fails is worth knowing, because it confuses owners. Most vehicles default to stop-start enabled when the switch cannot be read, since that is the emissions-compliant state. So the usual complaint is that stop-start can no longer be switched off — the button does nothing, and the engine keeps cutting out at junctions.
A driver reporting 'the stop-start button has stopped working' is describing this, and it is a switch fault rather than a stop-start system fault. The distinction matters, because the stop-start system itself is expensive to investigate and is not the problem.
Spilled drinks are a genuine and frequent cause, since these switches sit in centre consoles and door cards where liquid lands. Ask what was spilled and when.
