PSA's 1.2-litre three-cylinder — the PureTech, and the volume petrol engine across Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel and Vauxhall since the mid-2010s, in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms.

Its defining problem is the wet timing belt, and it is the most consequential example of that design in this catalogue. The belt runs inside the engine in oil, degrades faster than its stated interval on many cars, and sheds material that blocks the oil pump pickup — so the failure presents as oil starvation and a destroyed engine, not as a timing complaint. The issue was widespread enough to prompt extended warranty programmes and, on later engines, a redesign to a chain. On any PureTech, belt history is the first question and a rattle or low-oil-pressure warning is an immediate stop.

Beyond that it behaves like any small heavily boosted direct-injection engine: intake-valve carbon at mileage, and turbocharger life that tracks oil condition. Given the belt problem, oil grade and interval are not routine advice here — they are the failure mode.
