dCi is a badge, not an engine. It is Renault's word for its common-rail turbodiesels, and this catalogue carries it on Renault, Dacia, Nissan and Opel — 1.5 to 3.0 litres, four cylinders and six.

The displacement is what identifies the engine, and each is a different family:

  • 1.5 — K9K, by a long way the commonest, and the one with its own page here.
  • 1.6 — R9M, 130 to 160 PS, the engine that replaced the 2.0 in the Qashqai and Mégane.
  • 1.9 — F9Q, and see the warning below.
  • 2.0 — M9R, in the Qashqai, Mégane, Scénic, Laguna and Koleos.
  • 2.3 — M9T, the Master and the vans.
  • 3.0 — V9X, the V6.

⚑ A 1.9 dCi and a 1.9 dTi are the same block with completely different fuel systems. The F8Q/F9Q was built with indirect injection, direct injection and common rail, and only the last is badged dCi. Nothing about the injection side of one transfers to another, and a workshop procedure found under "Renault 1.9 diesel" may describe any of the three.

⚑ Two of these families answer to a second designation, depending on whose badge is on the car. The K9K is Mercedes-Benz's OM607 and OM608 in the A-Class and the Citan; the M9T is Nissan's YS23DDT in the Navara D23. So literature for "the 1.5 dCi" reaches back to Stuttgart as well as to Paris, and a part catalogue that finds nothing under one designation may find it under the other.

Establish the family code, which is on the engine and in the build sheet. The badge tells you the fuel system and the marque and nothing else.
