If this vehicle has been remapped or tuned, that is almost certainly why this code is set. It means the engine software is not what the manufacturer installed.
If you did not have it modified and bought the car second hand, take it seriously. It means a previous owner did — which is worth knowing about, may affect your insurance, and can make the vehicle fail an MOT if the change was emissions-related.
Tell your garage honestly if you know about any tuning. They cannot diagnose around it, and an undeclared remap wastes diagnostic time you will be charged for.
The fix is reloading the correct manufacturer software. Be aware that on many vehicles a record of the mismatch remains in the module afterwards, so this is not something that can be made to disappear.

The module has found software or calibration data that is not what the manufacturer put there.
Modern engine modules check their own contents against a signature, and this code is that check failing. It is a statement about the software, not about anything mechanical.
There are three quite different situations behind it, and they need separating before anything is done.
- The engine has been remapped. Performance tuning, an economy map, or an emissions delete all replace calibration data with something unsigned. This is by far the commonest cause.
- An update was interrupted. A programming session that lost power or communication partway through leaves partial data that fails the same check. The vehicle is otherwise honest and needs reflashing.
- The wrong software was installed — a calibration for a different market, engine variant or model year, loaded in error.
The consequences reach beyond the warning light and are worth stating plainly. Manufacturers read this code when assessing warranty claims; emissions-related modifications make a vehicle unlawful to use on the road in most jurisdictions and are an MOT failure; and insurers generally require declaration of modifications. A used vehicle showing this code was modified by somebody, whether or not the seller mentioned it.
Reflashing with the correct manufacturer calibration is the repair. Note that on many vehicles the record of the mismatch persists in the module's history even after the software is corrected.
