Have the fuel filter's water trap drained before driving further. On most diesels that is a tap at the bottom of the filter housing, it takes minutes, and it costs nothing — and it is the whole repair at this stage. The reason not to postpone it is that diesel fuel is the only lubricant the high-pressure pump receives. Water displaces that lubrication, the pump wears, and the metal debris it sheds travels downstream into the injectors — which typically turns a free job into replacing the pump, injectors, rail and lines together, one of the most expensive repairs a diesel can need and one insurers and warranties often decline as contamination. The car will drive normally in the meantime, which is precisely why this gets left. If you have recently filled up somewhere unfamiliar, mention it. And keeping the tank fuller in cold weather genuinely helps, because a part-empty tank breathes damp air and condenses it.

Wat deze code betekent

There is water in the fuel. This is one of the very few faults in the corpus where the remedy is free, takes minutes, and postponing it can cost most of a fuel system.

Why water matters so much more on a diesel than it sounds like it should. A petrol engine's fuel pump is a low-pressure electric pump and water is mostly a running problem. A modern diesel is different in a way that is not obvious: the fuel is the only lubricant the high-pressure injection pump ever gets. There is no separate oil feed. That pump generates pressures of a couple of thousand bar through clearances measured in microns, and it does so lubricated entirely by the diesel passing through it.

Water does not lubricate. It displaces the film the pump depends on, and metal contacts metal at pressures those parts were never intended to bear unlubricated.

The damage chain is what makes this expensive, because it does not stop at the pump. A worn pump sheds fine metallic debris into the fuel, and everything downstream of the pump is fed by the same rail. The particles reach the injectors, whose nozzles and internal valves have clearances finer still. The result is frequently not a pump replacement but a whole-system replacement — pump, rail, injectors, lines, and the tank flushed — because debris left anywhere in the system destroys the new parts. That is among the most expensive repairs a modern diesel can need, and it is routinely declined under warranty as contamination rather than failure.

Against that: draining the water trap. On most diesels this is a tap or a bolt at the bottom of the fuel filter housing, it takes a few minutes, and it is free. That is the entire remedy at this stage.

Where the water comes from, in rough order: condensation in a tank routinely run low, since a part-empty tank breathes damp air with every temperature change; poor-quality or contaminated fuel; a perished filler or sender seal letting rain in; and occasionally the wrong fuel or a deliberate adulteration.

And a caution about the warning itself: this is one of the few dashboard messages that is cheap to act on and ruinous to ignore, which is exactly the combination people get wrong. The car will drive perfectly with water in the fuel, right up until it does not.
