Mention any recent software update or module replacement. These two halves are updated as a matched pair, and one updated without the other guarantees this fault. It is a re-flash rather than a new part, and it is worth asking about explicitly before anything is replaced.
Have the battery and charging checked too. Low or unstable voltage makes control modules disagree with each other, and it is far cheaper than the alternative.
The car is drivable but slow. Get it seen before a long journey, since the restriction is the car protecting itself and it may tighten further.

A monitor module exists to watch another module, which makes this code unusually interesting: the watchdog is the one being doubted.
Safety-relevant powertrain control is frequently implemented twice — a main processor that does the work, and an independent monitor that checks the main one's arithmetic and can shut things down if it disagrees. The monitor is the reason a single processor fault cannot produce uncommanded torque.
So when the monitor's own reports become implausible, the vehicle loses its check rather than its control, and the correct response is conservative: reduced power, restricted operation, or a refusal to run. A car that has become noticeably gutless with this stored is not broken — it is running without its supervisor and limiting itself accordingly.
Internal faults are more likely here than in most of this range, because the monitor and the controller it watches usually share one physical module. That makes the module itself a genuine candidate, unlike almost everywhere else in this family — but it remains the last conclusion rather than the first, after supply, earth and software version have been established.
