Worth stopping for, even if the car feels only slightly flat. This code can mean a turbocharger is genuinely spinning faster than it was built to withstand, and that failure arrives suddenly — the compressor wheel can break up and send debris into the engine. Avoid heavy throttle; gentle driving to somewhere it can be looked at is reasonable, and calling for recovery is not an overreaction.

Ask for two things to be checked before any sensor is replaced:

  • A pressure test of the charge air system — every pipe, hose and clamp between the turbochargers and the engine. The engine chases a boost pressure, so a leak makes it spin the turbo faster and faster trying to reach a target it cannot. That is a cheap repair preventing an expensive failure.
  • The turbo changeover valves, if your car has a small turbo and a large one working in sequence. If the changeover sticks and never brings the large one online, the small one is left doing the whole job at speeds it was never designed for — and it is the unit least able to survive that. This is the specific way these engines destroy a turbocharger, and the cause is a stuck valve rather than the turbo itself.

If it has been like this for a while, ask for the turbo shaft to be checked for play and the compressor wheel for damage.

The second turbocharger's speed signal is electrically valid and does not make sense — a speed that does not correspond to what the engine is doing, or one beyond what the module will accept.

The whole argument at P2579 applies here and should be read alongside this: either the sensor is misreporting, or the turbocharger really is spinning faster than it was built to survive, and the second possibility must be excluded rather than assumed away. The module commands a boost pressure, not a speed — so a leak between the compressor and the engine makes it drive the turbocharger harder and harder chasing a target it can no longer reach, while the driver notices only mild flatness. Pressure-test the charge air system first.

A sequential twin-turbo installation adds a failure mode with no equivalent on a single-turbo engine, and it is the reason this code deserves its own page. The two turbochargers are brought in and out of use by changeover valves — a set of flaps or valves in the exhaust and intake paths that decide which unit is doing the work. When one of those sticks, a turbocharger can be left carrying load it was never sized for.

The damaging case is specific: if the changeover fails to bring the large turbocharger online, the small one keeps working alone at engine speeds where it should have handed over. A small turbocharger asked to supply a big engine's full airflow spins far beyond its design speed to do it — and it is physically the unit least able to survive that, because a small compressor wheel reaches its limiting speed sooner. The result is exactly this code, with a turbocharger that is being destroyed by a stuck valve somewhere else entirely.

So on a sequential system the changeover mechanism belongs in the investigation alongside the leak check, and ahead of the sensor. Replacing a speed sensor here can clear the warning while leaving a turbocharger still being overspeeded by a valve nobody looked at — the worst available outcome, and the same trap described at P2579 in a more expensive form.

A turbocharger that has already been overspeeded wants inspecting rather than clearing: shaft play, and compressor blades for rubbed tips or damage.
