The useful thing to understand is that nothing in the engine or gearbox has failed. This module's job is to independently double-check the main powertrain controller's work — a safety cross-check. With it unreachable, the vehicle is running without that supervision, so it deliberately limits itself rather than operating at full power unchecked. The lack of power is the car being careful, not a mechanical problem.
That is worth knowing because dramatic power loss naturally suggests something serious has broken, and here it has not.
It is safe to drive gently to somewhere it can be looked at, but do not plan a long journey on it.
Worth mentioning if other powertrain faults are stored at the same time: this module usually shares its power supply and earth with the main engine controller, so several faults together often mean one shared wiring problem rather than several modules failing.

The word monitor is the key to this code, and it describes an idea worth understanding: a module whose job is to watch another module.
On systems where a fault in the main controller could produce an unsafe outcome, a second, independent device checks its work — comparing what was commanded against what should have been commanded, and intervening if the two disagree. It is the same principle as the redundant pedal sensors the corpus describes at P2138: an independent check on something too important to trust to one device.
Losing the monitor therefore does not break the powertrain. It removes the supervision of it — and the correct response to unsupervised control is caution. Most vehicles derate: reduced power, a limited rev range, or limp mode, because operating at full capability with the safety check absent is exactly what the check exists to prevent.
That reframing is the useful content here. A driver experiencing sudden and dramatic power loss will reasonably assume something in the engine or transmission has failed. Nothing has. The vehicle has decided not to trust itself, and it is right to.
So the advice is that the derate is the symptom rather than the fault, and looking for a mechanical problem to explain the power loss is looking in the wrong place.
Diagnostically, the fact that this module sits alongside the main powertrain controller matters. They frequently share a supply, an earth and a connector — so this code appearing with powertrain codes points at what they share rather than at two failures, and the U0100 sequence applies: supply, earth, bus wiring, then the module.
