Do not treat this as "just the connected services", because one of the things it takes with it is the car's automatic emergency call.
Since 2018 every new car in the EU has been required to carry a system that calls the emergency services by itself after a serious crash, gives them your exact position, and opens a voice line — whether or not anyone in the car can speak. This module is that system, along with breakdown calling, stolen vehicle tracking and the phone app.
Nothing about driving changes, there is no warning, and that is exactly the problem. The only moment you would find out it was gone is the one moment it existed for.
Two of the common causes are worth knowing before you are quoted for anything.
If the car is seven years old or more, ask about the backup battery. The emergency call system carries its own small battery so it can still call after the main one has been destroyed in a crash. Those wear out on a timescale, like a smoke alarm battery, and replacing one is a routine and reasonably cheap job.
Ask whether the mobile network it uses still exists. Older 2G and 3G networks are being switched off country by country, and a module built for those simply has nothing to connect to. No repair fixes that. Some manufacturers offer an upgrade and some do not — you are entitled to a straight answer on which, rather than a diagnostic bill.
And if you bought the car used, ask directly whether the telematics has been disabled or removed. Some owners do that over data privacy, which is their choice — but whoever drives it next should know that the automatic emergency call went with it.

The telematics control module has stopped being heard from. The general reasoning is at U0100, and U0499 sets out what this module does and why its failure deserves attention it will never demand.
The one line that matters: this is the automatic emergency call. Every new car type-approved in the European Union since 2018 must carry it, with equivalents elsewhere — after a crash severe enough to deploy the restraints, the vehicle calls the emergency number itself, transmits its position and opens a voice channel, whether or not anybody inside can speak.
Silence means it will not. And there is no symptom of any kind — nothing about driving changes, no warning is required, and the absence becomes apparent at the single moment the system existed for. That is the entire argument for not filing this under "connected services".
Four causes, and two of them are not repairs.
- The internal backup cell has reached the end of its life. An emergency call module carries its own small battery so it can still call after the vehicle's battery is destroyed in the impact — and those cells are consumables with a service life of a few years. On a vehicle seven years old or more this is very often the whole answer, and it is a replacement item rather than a failure.
- The mobile network it was built for has been switched off. 2G and 3G are being decommissioned market by market, and a module that speaks only those has nothing to connect to. No repair changes that — some manufacturers offered a hardware upgrade and some did not, and an owner is entitled to a straight answer about which rather than a diagnostic bill.
- The aerial, which is the roof antenna module at U0185 and its connectors, routinely left unseated after headlining work.
- An aftermarket tracker, insurance box or dashcam spliced into the same circuits, which is exactly where such devices get fitted.
And one cause specific to silence that a buyer deserves to be told about. A telematics module can be deliberately disabled — unplugged, fused out, or removed — by an owner who did not want their vehicle's position and use reported. That is their choice to make. But it reports lost communication permanently, and the person driving the vehicle afterwards should be told that the automatic emergency call went with it. On a used vehicle showing this code with no other fault, that is a question worth asking directly.
