Engine stalls when coming to a stop
The engine dies as the vehicle slows to a halt, and restarts immediately afterwards. On an automatic this is a specific and recognisable fault rather than a general stalling complaint: the torque converter's lock-up clutch is supposed to release as you brake, and if it does not, the stationary wheels drag the engine to a stop through it — exactly as a manual stalls if you brake to a standstill without pressing the clutch. That it restarts straight away and runs perfectly is part of the pattern, and points away from anything wrong with the engine itself.

On an automatic this is one of the most recognisable faults there is, and it is not an engine fault. The torque converter's lock-up clutch mechanically couples engine to gearbox to remove slip at cruise, and it must release as the car slows. If it does not, the stationary wheels drag the engine to a halt through it — exactly as a manual stalls if you brake to a standstill without pressing the clutch.
The pattern is what identifies it, and every part of the pattern matters. It happens only when braking to a stop with drive selected. The engine restarts immediately and runs perfectly. There is no roughness before it, and none after. An engine that runs faultlessly either side of the stall has not failed, and that observation alone points away from the entire ignition and fuelling population that a general stalling complaint would send you into.
What actually fails is usually the lock-up control rather than the clutch itself — the solenoid that releases it, the module's release command, or transmission fluid degraded enough that the clutch drags when it should let go. Fluid condition is worth checking early because it is cheap and because it is also the commonest cause of the related shudder complaint, which points at the same clutch failing in the other direction.
