Ford's longitudinal ten-speed — in the F-150, Mustang, Ranger, Transit and the VW Amarok that shares the Ranger's platform.
It was designed jointly with General Motors, whose version is the 10L80, and the two are close enough that a great deal written about one describes the other — which roughly doubles the available literature if a reader knows to look.
Most of what is reported about it is the ratio count. Ten gears means constant changing, hunting between the tall ones on a light throttle, and a very tall top gear — behaviour rather than failure, and best settled by driving another example of the same model.
Its own recurring complaints are a harsh 1–2 change, a clunk on a downshift to a stop, and a hesitation when rolling back onto the throttle. These are adaptation and software far more often than parts: a relearn and a check for a transmission control update come before anything is quoted, and Ford has issued several.
The genuine failure is the torque converter and its lock-up clutch, presenting as a shudder at light throttle — and, as everywhere else on this site, fluid condition is the first thing to establish rather than the last.
It replaced the 6R80 in the same cars, sometimes within one model year. The tell is the selector display, not anything under the car.
