Gear Lever Position Sensor
Reports where the gear lever is on a shift-by-wire selector, measuring two axes — across the gate and fore-and-aft — so every valid position is a coordinate pair rather than a switch closure. The two axes provide redundancy: a reading plausible in one but impossible in the other is detectable instead of being acted on. The thing worth knowing about this whole arrangement is that there is no mechanical link between lever and gearbox: selecting park sends a request that an actuator carries out, where a cable-operated selector makes park a mechanical fact. That is why the dashboard display, not the lever, is the confirmation — and why the parking brake, which is mechanically independent, matters more on these vehicles than on older ones.
