Liquid spilled into the gear selector
A drink emptied into the console, which is where the selector switches live on most vehicles. Sugary liquid does not evaporate away — it dries to a conductive film that bridges contacts, so the symptoms are erratic rather than absent, and the owner is the only person who can report the spill.
