P0823: Gear Lever X Position Sensor 1 Circuit Intermittent/Erratic
What to do
If the car occasionally changes gear on its own in manual mode, or drops out of it unprompted, that is this fault. Mention any drink ever spilled near the gear selector, however long ago — it is a common cause and it will not be found by looking at the wiring.
What this code means
The lever's cross-gate position signal drops out or jumps briefly. On a selector where a coordinate pair is read continuously, a momentary jump can be interpreted as a deliberate movement — so the transmission may register a manual shift request the driver never made, or leave manual mode without being asked.
Spilled liquid is the cause worth asking about first. A centre console selector sits directly beneath the cup holders, and a drink tipped into it leaves a residue that becomes conductive as it dries, producing exactly this intermittent, position-dependent behaviour weeks after the spill has been forgotten.

Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.
What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
