P2191: System Too Lean at Higher Load Bank 1

What to do

Avoid heavy acceleration, towing and sustained high-speed climbs until this is repaired. A lean mixture under load runs hot and can cause detonation, which damages pistons and valves — this is the one member of the lean family that is a mechanical risk rather than an economy and emissions problem. Ask for fuel pressure and volume to be measured under load, not at idle; an idle reading is normal in most of these cases and is how the fault gets missed. Vacuum leaks are an unlikely explanation for a fault that only appears under load.

What this code means

Bank 1 runs lean under load — and, importantly, is fine at idle and in gentle driving.

This is the one member of the family that points away from vacuum leaks, and it does so decisively. The arithmetic under P2177 runs in reverse here: a fixed leak that is several per cent of the airflow at idle is a fraction of a per cent of the airflow at full throttle. A leak large enough to cause a lean condition under load would have made the engine barely idle at all. So a code that appears only under load is describing something else.

What it describes is the fuel system reaching a ceiling. Under load the engine asks for several times the fuel it needs at idle, and every restriction in the supply becomes visible at once:

  • A fuel filter clogged enough to limit flow — it passes idle demand indefinitely and starves the engine at high demand.
  • A weak fuel pump delivering adequate pressure at rest and unable to hold it at volume.
  • A failing high-pressure pump on a direct-injection engine, where the lobe and follower wear is a known consumable rather than a rare fault.
  • Injectors restricted by deposits, which limits their maximum delivery while leaving short idle pulses unaffected.

The distinguishing measurement is fuel pressure under load, not at idle — a pressure reading taken with the engine idling in a workshop is close to meaningless for this code, and taking one and finding it normal is how these faults get dismissed.

A lean mixture under load is the one lean condition that can damage the engine. Lean combustion burns hotter and raises the risk of detonation exactly where cylinder pressures are already highest, which is hard on pistons and valves. That is why this variant deserves prompter attention than the idle one, and why sustained heavy load — towing, motorway climbs, a loaded car — should be avoided until it is fixed.
