P2647: A Rocker Arm Actuator System Stuck On Bank 1
Do not keep driving
Stop driving it and have it looked at, particularly if there is a new tapping or ticking noise from the top of the engine.
The likely symptoms are a rough, lumpy idle and poor low-speed running, or on an engine with cylinder deactivation a persistent misfire feel, vibration and noticeable loss of power because a cylinder has stayed shut down.
The reason for stopping is mechanical rather than about comfort. A mechanism jammed part-way can lose contact with its camshaft lobe and strike it again under valve spring pressure, and camshaft and lifter damage is a known outcome of continuing in that condition. That converts a repair involving a switch or a solenoid into one involving the cylinder head, and the difference is large.
The cheap causes at P2646 are still worth checking first — but check them without driving it around in the meantime.
What this code means
The A rocker arm actuator on bank 1 engaged and did not release. The mechanism is at P2645 and the cost order for investigating it at P2646.
Stuck on is the worse direction, and on a cylinder deactivation engine it is the one that can turn an inexpensive fault into a cylinder head.
What the driver gets depends on the system. On variable valve lift, high lift is held at all times: the idle turns rough and lumpy, low-speed running is poor and fuel consumption rises, because valve timing meant for high revs is badly suited to everything else. On cylinder deactivation, a cylinder stays shut down permanently — the engine runs on fewer cylinders than it has, which reads as a persistent misfire, produces a noticeable vibration and takes a real bite out of the power.
Marked not to be driven, for a mechanical reason rather than a driveability one. An actuator or lifter that is jammed part-way, or releasing unevenly, can lose contact with its cam lobe and then meet it again under valve spring load. Camshaft and lifter damage is a documented outcome of running these systems in that state, and once a lobe is worn the repair is no longer the solenoid or the switch — it is the top of the engine. The gap between those two bills is what the warning is for.
A tapping or ticking noise that has appeared alongside this code is a reason to stop rather than to continue and see.
