Ticking or tapping from the top of the engine

A light, rapid tick from the top of the engine that speeds up and slows down with engine speed rather than with road speed — that single test places it in the valve train and rules out most of the alternatives. Loudest when cold and fading as oil pressure builds usually means a hydraulic element that is slow to fill; a tick that stays constant hot and cold is more often clearance that has genuinely opened up. What this usually means

A light, rapid tick from the top of the engine that speeds up and slows down with engine speed rather than with road speed — that single test places it in the valve train and rules out most of the alternatives.

Loudest when cold and fading as oil pressure builds usually means a hydraulic element that is slow to fill. A hydraulic lifter or lash adjuster is held at zero clearance by oil pressure, and one that has drained or is partly blocked takes time to pump up — so the clearance is real for the first seconds and the valve train taps until it closes.

A tick that stays constant hot and cold is more often clearance that has genuinely opened up — a solid-lifter engine out of adjustment, or wear at the cam follower or rocker. That version does not improve with oil and does not go away.

Worth reporting alongside the oil's condition and when it was last changed, because the parts involved are fed and quietened by oil pressure. A hydraulic lifter fed old, thin or dirty oil ticks for reasons that a service resolves; the same lifter fed correct fresh oil and still ticking is worn.

Two impostors are worth excluding, because both are cheaper. An exhaust manifold leak produces a rhythmic tick that follows engine speed exactly and is loudest cold — the classic manifold signature, because the crack closes as things expand. And injectors tick normally on a direct-injection engine, sometimes loudly enough to alarm a new owner, which is not a fault at all.

A tick that becomes a knock, or that grows quickly, is a different matter and should be treated as the more serious noise until proven otherwise.

    How to confirm it
    Time it against the oil pressure lamp extinguishing and the engine warming. Check oil level, grade and service interval.

    Service with the specified grade first. Renew the lifters if it persists on correct fresh oil.
  • Constant hot and cold

    Likely cause
    Clearance that has genuinely opened — adjustment on a solid-lifter engine, or wear at the follower or rocker
    How to confirm it
    Temperature independence is the discriminator. Check valve clearances against specification where the engine is adjustable.
    What fixes it
    Adjust the clearances, or renew the worn followers or rockers.
  • Rhythmic tick loudest cold, from the exhaust side, easing as it warms

    Likely cause
    An exhaust manifold leak — the crack closes as metal expands
    How to confirm it
    Listen at the manifold with a hose, and look for soot marks at the joint or gasket face. This is the classic manifold signature.
    What fixes it
    Renew the manifold gasket, studs or the manifold. Cheaper than valve train work and it presents identically.

    The injectors — normal, and often loud enough to alarm a new owner

    Check level, grade and interval before ordering parts. Sludge in a lifter is a real mechanism, not a hopeful one.

    Service with the specified grade and re-assess after a few hundred miles.
