What to do

Depending on which system the engine has, you may notice nothing at all, or the engine may feel flat at higher revs, or use more fuel than usual.

Before any part is bought, check the oil level and find out when it was last changed. These actuators are worked by engine oil pressure through small passages and fine screens — there is no separate fluid — so a low level, an overdue service or the wrong grade of oil produces these codes on entirely healthy hardware. It costs nothing to check and it is a common answer.

After that, this particular code points at wiring or the solenoid rather than anything inside the engine, which is the cheap end of this family.

What this code means

An open circuit in the control of the A rocker arm actuator on bank 1.

A rocker arm actuator changes what a valve does without changing the camshaft, and it does it by putting a locking pin through the rocker arm. Two quite different systems use the same trick, and which one a vehicle has decides what every code in this family means.

  • Variable valve lift. Two cam lobes per valve — a mild one and an aggressive one — with a pin that selects which the valve follows. Low lift gives economy and low-speed torque, high lift gives power. The engine gets two personalities from one camshaft.
  • Cylinder deactivation. The pin unlocks instead, so the rocker collapses and the valve never opens at all. With fuel and spark cut too, that cylinder stops breathing and becomes an air spring — the engine runs on half its cylinders under light load and all of them when asked.

The single most important fact about the whole family is that the actuator is hydraulic, and the hydraulic fluid is the engine oil. A solenoid admits oil pressure into a gallery, and that pressure moves the pin. There is no separate fluid and no reservoir of its own.

That turns oil from a maintenance item into a diagnostic one. These systems have small passages and fine mesh screens, so sludge from extended oil changes blocks them; the wrong viscosity changes how fast the pin can move and whether it arrives in time; and a low level drops pressure at exactly the moment the actuator is asked to work. The free first check on any code in this family is the dipstick and the service record — a real share of them are an oil change rather than a part.

An open control circuit is the simplest member of the family: the command never reaches the solenoid, so the actuator never operates. The connector, the wiring and the solenoid winding are the things to test, and on a bank 1 fault the reasoning at P2655 about what one bank rules out applies.
