What to do

Expect equipment on the specialist or converted part of the vehicle to have stopped working — body equipment, a tail-lift, a trailer system, tracking or tachograph functions — rather than anything to do with driving.

Six separate networks effectively means a van, chassis cab, minibus, motorhome or a vehicle with specialist equipment. Ordinary cars do not have this many.

So go back to whoever built or converted the body before a general workshop. That wiring is their work, and the fault is nearly always where their wiring meets the vehicle's.

And there is one question worth asking them directly, because it separates a good installation from a common one. Vehicle manufacturers provide a proper connector for exactly this — a documented socket with defined signals, so a converter can take road speed, engine speed and the rest without touching the vehicle's own networks at all.

Most faults of this kind come from somebody splicing into the vehicle's wiring instead, because it is quicker and it works — until it does not.

So: was the manufacturer's interface used, or was the wiring spliced? The converter can answer that; a franchised dealer usually cannot.

The vehicle is normally safe to drive. Do not use any affected body equipment, trailer or lifting gear until it has been checked.

What this code means

A fault has been detected on vehicle communication bus F. See U0028 for why the letter must be resolved first and U0003 for the electrical faults.

A sixth lettered network effectively identifies the vehicle: this is a commercial chassis, a converted van, a minibus, a motorhome or something carrying specialist equipment. Passenger cars do not run this many separate networks.

Which means the wiring in question was very likely installed by somebody other than the vehicle manufacturer, and that changes both where the fault is and who should look at it.

The point worth making, because it is the difference between a good installation and the usual one: manufacturers provide for this.

A body-builder interface is a documented connector, in a documented place, with defined signals, published in a guide written for exactly this purpose. It exists so that a converter can take road speed, engine speed, PTO state, door status and lighting without touching the vehicle's own networks at all.

And the fault is nearly always that somebody did not use it. Splicing into the vehicle's buses is faster, needs no documentation, and works — until it produces the reflections described at U0037, the voltage problems at U0005, or an added node the vehicle was never configured to expect.

So the two productive questions are what was fitted, and whether it went through the manufacturer's interface or into their wiring. The converter can answer both, and a franchised workshop generally cannot — which is why they are usually the right first call.

And where the interface was used properly, the fault is much more likely to be ordinary: the connectors at the join, exposed to the same salt and vibration as everything else under a working vehicle.
