U0082: Vehicle Communication Bus F (+) Open
What to do
Expect equipment on the converted or specialist part of the vehicle to have stopped working. One broken wire does this — see U0003.
On a working vehicle the list of places to look is shorter and more specific than on a car, which is good news:
- The join between the chassis wiring and the body wiring — by far the likeliest, and the place nobody has full drawings for.
- Anywhere the wiring crosses between the chassis and the body, which flex against each other under load. That wiring is in the same position as a car's door wiring — flexed for its whole life until it breaks.
- Under the bed or floor, in the road spray and stone damage, with no underbody covers to protect it.
- Anywhere loads are strapped or chained down.
And there is a free test for the flex point: does the fault change as the vehicle is loaded, or as the body is moved? On a tipper, cycling the body up and down is the test.
Go back to whoever converted the vehicle, since the join between their wiring and the manufacturer's is where this usually is.
What this code means
The positive line of vehicle communication bus F is open circuit. See U0003 for what an open does to a differential pair and U0080 for why this network is probably a converter's.
Where the break is has a shorter and more specific list on a working vehicle than on a car, and it is worth having:
- The join between chassis and body wiring, which is the single likeliest point and the one nobody has drawings for on both sides.
- Anywhere the loom crosses between a chassis and a body that move relative to each other. A body on a chassis flexes under load, and wiring bridging that gap is in the same position as a door harness boot — flexed for its whole life, and eventually broken.
- Under the bed or the floor, where road spray, salt and stone damage are constant and there is no underbody trim to shield anything.
- At any point a load is secured, since straps, chains and pallets find wiring that a car never encounters.
And the flex point deserves the same free check as a door: does the fault change as the vehicle is loaded, or as the body is moved? On a tipper, cycling the body is a test.
