Brake Pedal Position Sensor
Reports how far the brake pedal has travelled, as a continuous value rather than the on/off a brake light switch gives.
The difference matters most on hybrid and electric cars. Gentle braking is done by the motor generating current back into the battery, and the friction brakes are blended in as demand rises. Blending needs a number, and it needs it accurately enough that the handover is invisible to the driver — a pedal that feels different halfway down is this signal going wrong.
Emergency brake assist is the other use. The system watches how fast the pedal moves: a stab is read as panic and full pressure applied before the driver's own effort arrives. A rate cannot be measured from a switch.
They are usually doubled, reported as circuit A and circuit B, so the module can tell a plausible-but-wrong reading from an obviously dead one. Two circuits disagreeing points at the sensor; one open usually points at wiring.
